I wasn't even trying to lose this week. Only want to maintain till spring. In my opinion late spring, summer, early autumn is the time to lose, and winter is the time to maintain.

Re: [Vegetarianslimming] Started the Rice Diet Monday and I've lost over 13 pounds as of this morning

Hi Dena,

If you go to Durham NC and spend a few weeks there as a 'Ricer' it's
probably a bit more restrictive, but I'm following the home based plan from
The Rice Diet Solution so day 1 of each week is the most restrictive. It's
best to read the book because it goes into much more detail, but it's
basically a low-fat and low-salt plan, as they claim the high salt levels in
the processed foods most of us eat is what causes the cravings to keep
eating more and more. I must say, though I initially started day 1 thinking
wow, those are small portions, it will never satisfy me, the truth is it
did. I wasn't hungry. Maybe that's the lack of salt, or maybe it's being
starch-based, but either way I was thrilled that I wasn't hungry and I lost
weight. Obviously the more you have to lose, the more you're likely to lose
in week one, and I started at 271 pounds.

Portion sizes for this diet are:

1 starch =
1/3 cup rice or beans
1/2 cup cooked grains, pasta or starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, green
peas, yams)
Or 1 slice of bread or 1/2-1cup cereal (depending on the cereal)

1 fruit =
1/2 a banana, 1 medium fruit or 1 cup cut fruit, grapes or blueberries, etc.

1 vegetable =
1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw vegetables

So day 1 of week 1 each meal you're allowed 2 starches and 2 fruits.

The rest of week one breakfast is 1 starch, 1 non-fat dairy (or soy milk)
and 1 fruit
Lunch & Dinner are each: 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit

Hope that helps, but as I said, you're better off reading the book because
they get into the rationale of the plan and how it also involves
mindfulness, meditation and yoga it's all about a way of life rather than
just a diet, and taking care of your mind, body and spirit. If you want to
see the exact menus I've been eating, you can look on my blog, I listed them
every day for the first week.

Re: [Vegetarianslimming] Started the Rice Diet Monday and I've lost over 13 pounds as of this morning

Thanks Cassie, I do feel great! The meals are good, though a bit bland, but
I think that¹s what helps. When things taste really good (rich, creamy,
delicious) I tend to eat faster and eat more, but with what I¹m eating now I
eat slower and find it satisfies me. I do feel good, and I don¹t really
feel hungry, but I never feel full either like I used to after a big meal.
But I do feel satisfied and that¹s all that matters really. Well ‹ that and
dropping weight fast, that certainly makes it easier to stay motivated.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my progress since starting The Rice Diet last Monday.
It¹s Saturday afternoon, so I¹m half way through day 6, and as of this
morning I am down 13.23 pounds. I feel great, I¹m not hungry nor do I have
any cravings, so it¹s been really easy to avoid temptations. Tonight will
be the real test hubby will be away on a gig, so I¹ll be all alone.
That¹s usually when I eat things I shouldn¹t! But I¹m satisfied on this
plan, so any temptation to eat off plan would be because of boredom or
emotions, not real hunger, so I¹ve got a plan in place. I can read, walk
the dogs, or just turn on the jukebox and dance if I get bored, so hopefully
I¹ll be fine. Just wanted to share how thrilled I am on this plan in my
first week.

[Vegetarianslimming] Started the Rice Diet Monday and I'm down 6.61 pounds

I started the Rice Diet on Monday 31st October it¹s Wednesday evening here
so I¹m just finishing day 3 now. I lost nearly 4 pounds the first day and
another 2.65 pounds this morning so I can¹t wait to see what tomorrow
brings. They say women lose about 19 pounds the first month and men about
30 but that depends on your start weight. I started at 271 so I hope to
see the big drops continue for a while.

I was hoping to find others who¹ve tried it to get some meal ideas, but so
far I¹m going well.

NEW VEGETARIAN SLIMMING GUIDELINES
(As of May 2006, with minor amendments September 2008)

1. Posts should be of general interest about
vegetarian health and slimming (weight loss),
including recipes (see below). This is not the place,
however, for medical advice.

2. We welcome only *Tried-and-True* recipes

well as low in sugar and calories, suitable for
slimming/weight loss. Recipes must be vegetarian (or
vegan) and edited to exclude all references to meat
and dead-animal products. Eggs, dairy and honey are
permitted. Please indicate the source of any recipes
which you did not originate yourself.
Please post the recipes to the list in the usual manner,
adding an indication "Recipe" in the subject line.
A moderator will then place the recipes in
the appropriate folder in the Files on our web page.

3. Please observe the following:
No anti-vegetarian (or anti-vegan) posts or material;
no political and/or religious posts or material; no
commercial posts or material which benefit, directly
or indirectly, the member or the member's family in any
way. (Links to members' own *non*-commercial web pages,
blogs and/or groups may be included in the Members'
folders at the top of the Links page and/or be
included discreetly [url only] below a member's

4. The usual warning about spam, flames, x-rated
material, etc., apply, as do the rules of Netiquette.

5. Any queries about the above or problems arising
should be directed to the moderators at the following

[Vegetarianslimming] File - Thought For Food

(Vegetarian Health and Slimming Group)

THOUGHT FOR FOOD!

1. The Thought:

Do Vegetarians and Vegans ever need to lose weight? Of course we do (through a variety of circumstances, which usually boils down to taking in more fuel than we are able to burn off). Sad but true, fat happens. Something we can do on this list is exchange wonderful recipes in keeping with our needs. (The exercise is up to you - but we're with you in spirit!) As a quick rule of thumb, it's best to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, the more colours the better, whole grains rather than refined grains, and less processed food and sugars.

2. The Food:

SLIMMING: Of course, *all* recipes sent here should be vegetarian, tried-and-true *and* suitable for slimming (weight loss), which is to say not loaded with high-calorie ingredients such as too much sugar, dried fruit, sweetened preserves, etc. That's just obvious. Also, however, please note that this is a low-fat group and we, therefore, draw attention to some foods that should be either avoided or used only in small amounts in the recipes posted:

* full-fat dairy, including cheese, cream, yoghurt, butter, etc.
* full-fat soy products
* coconut cream and milk
* most nuts
* margarine and cooking oils
* peanut butter and the like
* mayonnaise and fatty salad dressings
* olives
* avocados

There are probably more (send them in if you think of them!) to be added, but this gives the general idea. Many dairy and soy products, nut butters and coconut milks, etc., can frequently be found in low-fat form and these are more suitable. Other ingredients (dairy cheese, for eg., and nuts, fatty fruits, etc.) are great for garnish, of course, and/or a little added flavour, but not as a major ingredient.

(A good tip: Always read the nutritional data even on packages of prepared foods labelled Vegetarian or Vegan, including faux 'meats'.)

Hope this helps a bit ;-) Don't let it scare you - we'll help happily if you have a recipe you'd like to use but need to 'slim' it down!

[Vegetarianslimming] good morning

thanks so much for your patience, cindi and thanks for the welcome, lila.....i've read through some of the recipes in the file and have found some interesting ones

in case you're wondering why a non vegitarian, non vegan who doesn't need to lose weight is here, it is because my husband has been put on to a " heart healthy " diet and upon researching how we can eat good, healthy, interesting food that doesn't have bad fats ( basically leaving out animal products, i found that i was cooking more and more like a vegan every day :)

since for many years we've been what would be called " health food nuts " and eat organic, non gmo, " clean " foods, it hasn't been all that great of a transition for our family but it does take some learning.....ii just want to be able to be able to keep meals and food at our house interesting and fun to eat rather than being a problem.....i'll bet that lots of you know what i mean

thanks again and i hope that it will be ok to ask advice in the future.....peace, mary
