Of course the people who blamed Spanish cucumbers didn't think of the knock-on
effects on salad-producers in the Netherlands, UK and elsewhere. And there still
doesn't seem to be any evidence that cucumbers were to blame.

I am still buying fresh produce but cooking it. I think lettuce is OK braised or
chopped up in the soup. It probably isn't necessary though.

But am going out to meet friends for lunch today and wondering what it's safest
to eat. I don't like the places where they choose to eat.
