[Vegetarianslimming] Re: Is my bike a vegetarian?

I believe Michelin tyres might be the only ones guaranteed to be totally animal free. Other makes are thought to use animal-sourced stearic acid in the production technique. Reading through manufacturing techs it seems Schwalbe might be veggie. There might be some animal derivatives in some greases too. However, at least we can minimise our affect on other creatures. It would be nearly impossible to totally not affect them. By not eating meat we are slicing into the industrial mindset of using animals as products - hopefully.

I thought he might say the tires ‹ I¹d heard that rendered animal parts are
used in producing some types of rubber, including the kind that is used in
tires.

I collected a new spare cycle from a bike shop yesterday. Mainly it will be my son riding it when he's over from Nottingham. We can then go for some all-day touring together. I've a Dawes Super Galaxy at home – great but pricey to have a clone so I ordered its younger sister, a Dawes Vantage. I said, "No thanks, the Brooks is made of leather and I'm a veggie."

"No problem," he said, "but what about other stuff on the bike that is made from animals?"

"There isn't anything," I said, wondering if maybe there was some lanolin in a lubricant.

"Ah," he said, pointing at the handlebars. "The tape."

"But... but they're cork."

"Yes," he said, with a smile showing he'd scored.

I waited a minute to see if the penny would drop by itself, but when it didn't I had to say, "Cork is tree."

[Vegetarianslimming] Re: Weightwatchers

As a Gold member I don't have to pay any more. I paid the absolute minimum I needed to get to Gold. It is certainly an incentive to get to Gold as soon as possible and stay there.

Yes, I made up my own diets, but it was (and still is) useful to have a time and a place to go, where someone else weighs me and where there's a live group around me with the same reason for being there.

Well, if it's working,(ie: you're losing) I can't see that she can criticize. If you play the 'free' foods/low point foods enough, you can practically have zero point days! I often fix Deb zero point meals, using the "Simply Filling" plan,(I am a chef by trade) and her members are amazed by that.

[Vegetarianslimming] Re: Weightwatchers

I enrolled in weight watchers many years ago. I had to rewrite the program for myself as a vegetarian--it may be better now. I finally figured out what they were pushing and saved $$$ by doing it by myself. However, I did not really use the support group part of it. There were valuable tips I learned like keeping hydrated, cooking with fat-free canned milk, eating lots & lots of veggies, etc--stuff like that.

Kathleen

She doesn't approve because she thinks I don't eat enough. There are several vegetarians and vegans in the group but she doesn't comment on that.

Of course her comments have to be relevant to the majority of the group, also I think she has difficulty understanding or believing that other people don't necessarily do or want to do what she does or wants to do.

I don't want to change meetings though, mine is the nearest to where I live and I can walk there on a Saturday morning.

Anyway, I've been going there for nearly 18 months (minus a few weeks for holidays) so, so far, it's working.

If that is so, perhaps you should find another meeting - WW does endorse a veg lifestyle, though I'm sure there are many leaders who don't understand. My best friend is a WW leader, and she is a vegan. She's not allowed to "preach" veganism, but she can encourage it.

I am not following the WW plan but use the meetings for psychological support, though the group leader doesn't approve.

I've been hovering around 8 stone for a couple of months now and it gets boring.

But if I give up now I'm afraid the 50+ pounds will soon come back.

Re: [Vegetarianslimming] Weightwatchers

Well as long as it's working for you individually (and it sounds like it is!) that's all that matters.
I've moved and have increased my bicycle commute by 10fold. It's "only" 3 miles each way but I've already dropped down a pants size in the last week. 30 miles a week is a lot more riding than I was doing before I moved so I hope to keep up the trend of losing weight and getting in shape. I'd really love to break that 200 barrier, it's been years/longer than I can remember. I'm currently around 240, well, I was last week anyways.

I do as much exercise as I can but I can't do a lot because of (non-weight-related) disabilities.

I am not following the WW plan but use the meetings for psychological support, though the group leader doesn't approve.
